Brake fluid, power steering fluid, radiator fluid, oil, transmission fluid, air-conditioning coolant, windshield wiper fluid, gas… okay maybe not gas but overall, most of these fluids go unnoticed in your vehicle. Of course people have a gauge that is constantly checked for gasoline, but how often do you check the other fluids in your vehicle?
It’s imperative that you make these fluid checks a priority as low fluids can be the cause of an unnecessary accident:
· Transmission fluid which keeps the gears in your transmission slippery ensures they change quickly to avoid stalling and overheating. This is one of the most overlooked and arguably one of the most important liquids in your vehicle.
· Oil is similar to transmission fluid in that it keeps all the moving parts of your engine lubricated to ensure they work with ease. Make sure you get your oil change on a regular basis
· Radiator fluid prevents your engine from overheating which is going to be extremely important in the upcoming summer. If your radiator fluid is low it can cause your engine to overheat. A radiator fluid flush is necessary anywhere from 80,000km to 240,000km depending on your vehicle.
· Brake fluid facilitates the clamping of your brakes on your brake rotors or drums at the press of your brake pedal meaning brake fluid should always be maintained to ensure optimal stopping ability. If your brake pedal feels spongy or you have to depress it farther then usual it could mean your pads are worn down too far and a brake service is required
· Power steering fluid which can be found in most modern cars allows you to steer your vehicle with ease. This should be monitored on a regular basis to ensure your vehicle’s handling.
· Air conditioning coolant is going to be extremely important when it comes to enjoying yourself in these upcoming summer months. Although you need a special gauge to check this coolant, it is important you get your mechanic to check the level of fluid.
· Windshield wiper fluid is going to keep you safe on those dry, dusty days and will be the most important factor in keeping your visibility at 100% to avoid accidents.
All of these fluids should be monitored closely to ensure your vehicle is running smoothly which can ultimately reduce your chances of having an unnecessary accident. In order to check all these fluids (their levels and quality), you will have to check your vehicle’s owner manual as all vehicles are slightly different.
